12V 4000mAh NiMH Pack for Defibrillator Monitors: Design Based on Customer RFQ Requirements
This article is based on a real customer inquiry for a replacement or equivalent battery pack used in a defibrillator monitor. The target specification is clear: 12V, 4000mAh assembled Ni-MH battery pack, referenced to part number 21063-0000A. What makes this project serious is not only the voltage and capacity, but also the combined requirements for pulse discharge, high temperature resistance and specified protection components.
For medical device power systems, the rated capacity cannot be treated as a flexible marketing number. It must be consistent with what the device expects, what the charger expects, and what the end user will rely on in an emergency. Therefore, this design follows the customer’s real requirements as closely as possible, rather than starting from a general-purpose battery specification.
Understanding the Real Requirements
The customer’s request is straightforward, but it contains several critical constraints that must not be relaxed:
- The battery pack must be 12V, 4000mAh.
- It is used in a defibrillator monitor.
- The pulse working current is around 5C for 6 seconds.
- The continuous working current in monitoring mode is around 0.12C.
- The pack must withstand up to 80°C during operation.
- The customer prefers specific NTC and PolySwitch models, but will review equivalent components.
Why This Cannot Be Solved With a Standard Consumer NiMH Pack
A standard 12V NiMH pack with 4000mAh capacity may look correct on paper, but it does not automatically satisfy the defibrillator monitor application. The real question is whether the pack can deliver 20A for 6 seconds while still maintaining enough voltage for the device to complete its defibrillation sequence.
For this reason, the cell selection should focus on three points:
- Stable 4000mAh capacity at 0.2C discharge.
- Low internal resistance to support 5C pulse discharge.
- High-temperature formulation to withstand 80°C peak conditions.
Cell Selection: C-Type 4000mAh High-Temperature Power NiMH Cell

For this application, we recommend a C-type 4000mAh high-temperature power NiMH cell arranged in a 10S1P configuration. This means ten cells in series, each contributing approximately 1.2V nominal voltage, to reach 12V total nominal voltage.
The capacity is intentionally specified at 4000mAh, not a higher consumer-grade rating. The reason is that medical equipment relies on predictable energy delivery, especially during high-current pulses. A cell with a higher headline capacity at room temperature may not maintain the same performance under 5C load or at elevated temperatures.
Why a C-type power cell makes sense here
- Capacity matches real requirement: 4000mAh is the value stated by the customer. The pack should deliver this capacity under standard discharge conditions, while also leaving enough performance margin for pulse events.
- Pulse discharge capability: A power-grade C cell can handle 5C pulse discharge more reliably than smaller cells or general-purpose cells. This helps keep voltage sag within acceptable limits during defibrillation.
- High-temperature tolerance: In defibrillator monitors, the pack may be exposed to high ambient temperature, enclosed equipment bays, or heat generated during charging. A high-temperature cell formulation helps reduce performance degradation under these conditions.
- Proven form factor: C-size NiMH cells are widely used in industrial and medical battery packs. They offer a good balance between energy storage, current capability, mechanical stability and long-term availability.
Protection System Design
Medical device battery packs do not only need cells. They also need protection components that match the device’s firmware, charger and safety logic. In this case, the customer mentioned both NTC and PolySwitch.
PolySwitch overcurrent protection
The customer referenced Polyswitch XFuse XLR730 as a preferred part. This is a resettable overcurrent protection component. In a battery pack, it helps protect against short circuits, overcurrent faults and certain charger failures.
We can review this part or provide an equivalent solution. However, for medical packs, any replacement must be evaluated carefully. The hold current, trip current, voltage rating and initial resistance should all be compatible with the original design.
NTC temperature sensing
The customer also listed several NTC options, including Thermistor ExSense EQ3950A and DxxSensor XNC5103. Temperature sensing is important because the charger and device use temperature feedback to control charging speed and prevent overheating.
An NTC may look like a simple component, but it directly affects charge safety. If the resistance-temperature curve does not match the device’s firmware, the system may read incorrect temperature values. In the worst case, this could lead to slow charge errors, false overheat protection, or undetected overheating.
| Component | Customer Reference Model | Equivalent Review Option | Key Parameters to Match |
|---|---|---|---|
| PolySwitch PPTC | XLR730 | Equivalent 7.3A hold current PPTC | Hold current, trip current, voltage rating, resistance |
| NTC Thermistor | ExSense EQ3950A | 10kΩ 3950K epoxy NTC | 10kΩ @25°C, B-value 3950K, tolerance |
| NTC Thermistor | DxxSensor XNC5103 | 10kΩ small-head plug-in NTC | Resistance curve, temperature range, response time |

What We Normally Review Before Quotation
For this type of medical battery pack, we usually complete a technical review before providing a formal quotation. This helps avoid misunderstandings later, especially when the pack is intended for life-saving equipment.
- Confirm whether the 4000mAh rating is based on 0.2C discharge or another test condition.
- Confirm the exact cell size and chemistry: C-type high-temperature power NiMH is our initial proposal.
- Review whether the customer prefers original NTC/PolySwitch parts or equivalent alternatives.
- Check the pack outline dimensions, connector type and wiring position.
- Clarify whether the pack needs to match an existing device housing or an existing charger.
- Confirm MOQ, sample lead time and production lead time.
Production and Quality Considerations
Medical battery packs require stricter quality control than standard industrial packs. For this reason, we would normally apply the following checks:
- 100% voltage and internal resistance checking before assembly.
- Capacity grading at 0.2C to verify 4000mAh performance.
- Pulse discharge testing to confirm 5C 6-second performance.
- High-temperature performance spot check.
- Protection component verification for PolySwitch and NTC.
- Final pack inspection for open circuit voltage, connector polarity, wiring and mechanical assembly.
Request for Quotation Support
If the customer provides the attached datasheets or drawings mentioned in the email, we can make a more precise proposal. The key items we would review include the cell specification, pack internal structure, protection circuit, connector definition, NTC resistance value and PolySwitch part number.
